Your Guide to Wheel and Rim SafetyYour Guide to Wheel and Rim Safety

Exploding industrial tires have killed operators and mechanics at mines, pits and quarries around the world. The law says that whenever work is to be performed on a tire with a multi-piece wheel, a special device should be used to prevent injury to the worker. When you're operating equipment with large air-filled tires, or working around tires, remember these tips:

Safety Tips:

  • Always use "stand-off" air hoses, devices and gauges when topping up or deflating a tire.
  • Stay out of the trajectory of rings or wheel components and keep others out of the trajectory.
  • Never inflate tires higher than the manufacturer's specified pressure.
  • Follow the "80% Rule." If a tire has less than 80 per cent of its working pressure, safely deflate and have it serviced.
  • Never use a welder or torch on any rim.
  • Whenever you find a rim with components that are worn, broken, corroded or improperly assembled, report the problem. The tire should be safely deflated and the equipment tagged out-of-service.
  • Multi-part rims should only be serviced by trained professionals.

Watch out for:

Possible danger signs on multi-piece wheels include:

  • Cracks between studholes or handholes
  • Cracks in the rim base
  • Cracks in the side ring
  • Corrosion or rusting of rings and rims
  • Missing or loose wheel nuts
  • Chipping or separation at the lock ring seat

Beware of any vehicle or machine which has contacted an electrical source. The tires may explode as much as 48 hours after the contact.

Once the operator has been safely removed from the cab, isolate the machine until it can be serviced by a trained professional.

Your company should have a procedure for safely handling multi-piece wheels. Report any problems you see to your supervisor. If you're not sure how to stay safe around tires, talk to your supervisor. Your company may need to check with the tire manufacturer or service company and develop procedures.
