Like many new technologies, backfill was introduced to make the workplace safer, but can present new hazards. Prepared by the Mining Engineering department at Queen's University, this new report summarizes research to assess all components of typical backfill operations and corrective actions taken by mines to mitigate hazards and disruptions to operations. The project, sponsored by WSN, draws together results from detailed questionnaires and site surveys from 11 different mines. The 74-page report describes safe practices for:
- backfill plants,
- backfill transportation and distribution systems, and
- stope placement
as well as general procedures for hazard prevention.
