Thirty-nine miners died in the fire, and the commission investigating it later recommended a service to ensure that trained and equipped crews would be available to respond to such emergencies in the future. The mine rescue program was up and running by the next year. The year 2004 marks the 75th anniversary of the Mine Rescue program in Ontario.
